Sunning in the swamp (1) Empty Sunning in the swamp (1)

Somewhere in the boggy swamp on the mainland, Atteryv lies stretched over a large, sun baked rock to warm his scales and soothe his everyday aches and pains. The black drake would be quite obvious to any passerby, as his scales, though dark, glistened like volcanic glass and his chest plates were a distinct shade of blue, both abnormal in the dull earth tones of the swamp. Nearby, a large hill supports the opening of a tunnel, which leads down into his lair. Currently, he is oblivious to his surroundings and snoring ever-so-lightly, back paws occasionally twitching.

Marhri was flying overhead, the dragoness's light blue scales hiding her perfectly against the sky, The only way one would be able to tell she was there at the moment was the underside of her wings were a calm yellow, although this could be mistaken as light shining through a patch of clouds. Her eyes, though they were probably too distant for any to see, were a verdant green and would probably blend in well with any plants in the area. If there was any in the sky. She peered down at the swamp and noticed the shine of the other dragon's scales which first caught her attention. And then the blue of his chest kept it. She figured that it was highly unlikely that the dragon would notice her, and she could use a hunting partner for today. She landed as gently as she could nearby and noticed the dragon was sleeping before sighing and walking over, nosing their head to try to rouse them, and wondering why they picked such an odd spot to sleep.

Atteryv wakes immediately, but gives no indication of it for a few long moments, scenting a dragoness and deciding to pay her back for disturbing his nap by making her wait. As he slowly wakes, coherence wipes away such thoughts and he opens one eye questioningly. "Do you need something?" He flicks his tail in agitation as he stands and starts to stretch, assuming she would want him to move for whatever it was. "If I can judge by your wings, you can fly.. So you don't need directions. Mmm.. Hungry, perhaps? There are gators around these parts, good for eating." Yawning, Atteryv finally flows fluidly off of the rock, carefully balancing his weight on the soft ground so as not to sink any. "So, looking for a hunting partner, or something else?"

Marhri, unaware he had woken, continues nosing him until he shows signs that he had been roused. She then asked, because she was curious, "What are you doing here?....and do not think to ask me the same...answers will come in time." She nodded to his questions and confirmed, "I am hungry...and also I tend to gather extra food in case some needy young or injured dragon wants to eat as well. And yes I can fly, quite recently learned to well enough actually...so..." She looks around for a source of water, which doesn't take her long to find. "The gators are good food here? Hmm...but wouldn't they be dangerous. And yes, I stopped you because two can hunt better than one." She watches him get off the rock and asks, in somewhat of a demanding tone, "You...cannot fly?"

Atteryv grimaces as the dragoness, still nameless to him, so demandingly inquires why he is there. "I live here, thank you." He rolls his eyes at her attempt at being enigmatic, knowing she had probably been enjoying her new wings. He also disinterestedly makes the connection that this was why she was hungry, before snorting at her question about him being able to fly. "Of course I can fly! I didn't just sit around and wait until my wings were big enough, I actually worked for it.." He looks offended at the suggestion. After a few moments, he relaxes slightly and nods to her earlier question. "The gators are good hunting, and dangerous as well. If you're soft, even a full grown dragon is food for them." He grins and quite proudly informs this aloof dragoness, "I hunt them daily, even make a coin or two from the skins." He makes a show of stretching as he waits for her to acknowledge him as her better, feeling it was his due after her annoying questions and waking him up.

Marhri flicks her tail and sighs a bit, "Ah...I see, I was going to ask why you were sleeping out in the middle of this place, but it seems I have the answer for that question." Marhri frown at this black and blue dragon and growls a bit before saying, "Sorry if I am wrong, but you make it sound as though I did not work for my wings?" She noticed he also seemed offended, and relaxed slightly. "Erm...sorry I was not trying to say that you couldn't, I was just curious as to why you had asked me. And mmm...the gators may not be the best option then. But I'll try until I get injured at least." She looked back at him and asked, "Can you give me any pointers, and help, then? I would prefer to get the hunting done as soon as possible."

Atteryv gradually relaxes as she speaks, seeming oddly reassured at her growl for some reason and calming further as she asks him for advice, not one to withhold things on a first impression. "They have soft underbellies, rather like some dragons, and they can snap their jaws shut faster than either of us. If you can get one out of the water and flip it without getting bitten, you just stand on the jaws, they don't have much opening power, and from there you're free to tear at the underside." He nods in the direction of the largest nearby pool. "There's one in there, been trying to draw it out just to make the area around my lair safer, but it won't have it." He sighs and shrugs. "What I really need is for someone just as fast as me to dip their tail in there and get out of the way in time to keep it. From there, I can handle it, but not if it slips back in the water... And it's certainly big enough to share."

Marhri listens to the other explain the best way to hunt the alligators, and takes note that they are likely powerful enough to kill a dragon, as Atteryv had said before. She feels a bit more uneasy about hunting them but nods, "Okay then...I'll use my tail if they're really good for eating. And split it? I was thinking we would hunt first and eat only once we got tired...is there more than one that we can hunt, or just the one that you noticed earlier?" If one were to look at her, she would obviously not need more than half a gator to fill herself, and her tone had also shifted to a much kinder one once he had offered to help. She walked over to the water and prepared her tail, nooking it so she could pull it out at a moment's notice before dipping the tip into the water, "Ready?" She asked him as she watched the water carefully.

Atteryv chuckles at her thought that they would need more than one gator between them. "One usually lasts me a couple of days, and this is a big one. As she dips her tail into the water, he immediately falls into a hunting crouch, nodding and watching the water. A few moments later, he spots the tiniest of ripples and shouts, "MOVE," hurling himself along the gator's expected trajectory a few moments later. Should all go well, he would fly into a huge, lightly battle-scarred reptile slightly larger than he was, sliding underneath to flip it onto its back and quickly pouncing on its huge jaws, his considerable weight holding them shut. Should Marhri freeze, however, he would likely hit the gator as its jaws snapped towards her tail, pushing it away just enough to cause her only a grazing wound.

Marhri would pull her tail out with an air of confidence until she saw just how huge the reptile leaping at her was. After which she would freeze up, tail out of the water already. And once Atteryv knocked it out of the way, she gasped in a breath and started rapidly breathing in fear, "That...looked like I would be..." She turned her head over to look at Atteryv pinning the huge creature down and nodded, "Thanks...but...how will we get more than one of these? Should we maybe go hunt something else?...I don't want either of us getting too severely hurt over this."

Atteryv chuckles as he tears open the soft belly of the gator effortlessly. "We only need the one. Lots of meat, and it's filling." Though his claws leave deep furrows and the creature stops moving, he makes two more similar attacks to ensure it is dead before stepping off of its jaws. "This one is big, even for a swamp gator. Should feed both of us now, and have enough left for me to eat later tonight, if I don't catch anything else." He skillfully runs his claws along the border between the soft belly and far tougher hide of the creature's back, slowly peeling the latter away with only a few scratches. Carving away a chunk of meat to gnaw on himself, he nods towards the newly carved carcass. "Help yourself. Plenty there for the both of us, and you risked your tail for it." After a few moments spent filling his belly, he goes back for another piece and smiles to the dragoness. "I'm Atteryv, by the way. What can I call you?"

Marhri stares at the gator and nods, "This would most definitely be enough for us but I told you before, I want to get food for those who cannot hunt too...obviously I can't help everyone keep from going hungry, but every little thing helps, right?" She looks down at the gator for a moment and nodded to him, as he had already cut into it, she didn't see a reason to save the meat for later and let it possibly go bad. She leaned forward and bit part of the gator out before chewing on it slowly, seeming to eat only a small amount before saying, "K let's go!" It was obviously not enough to fill her up, "You'll still help me, right? And...my name is Marhri. It is nice to meet someone as helpful as you Atteryv."

Atteryv shakes his head. "I only helped you with this one because you were hungry, and I needed it out from in front of my lair. Eat your fill or it will go to waste.." He considers her reasons for wanting to hunt further before shaking his head. "Everything in this swamp is close to your size.. And you have no way to store food for more than a few days. If you are starved for conversation as well, I'll talk to you here.. No need to drag me out into the outer reaches to waste energy -and- food." He stretches and looks longingly back at his sunning rock.

Marhri sighs and says, "The food would not be wasted...unless you consider saving lives a waste. Are you so selfish that you just enlisted my help to clear your lair...I should just go hunt elsewhere then if everything here is my size..." She completely ignores his suggestion that she should eat her fill now and storms off angerily, now considering the drake to be very rude and inconsiderate of others, "Go back to your rock, I don't really want conversation right now. There's a sick young one back at my lair I must tend to, and I will continue my search for food."

Atteryv winces and follows her apologetically, abandoning his hopes of returning to his rock. "I'm sorry.. It didn't sound like you had a particular one in mind. I try only to help what is put in front of me, Marhri. Not worth the extra worry... But if you would like, I can help you feed your sick young one, and possibly help with whatever the problem is." He circles around in front of her to cut her off and hopefully make her listen. "I helped you because you were hungry, and removing the danger in front of my lair was a bonus. Now, how young, and what is the problem? I can watch for herbs that might help while we hunt." His posture has changed from one of inflated superiority and slight annoyance to a more apologetic and regretful slump.

Marhri growls and says, "Oh so now you care!" then notices that his mood has massively changed since a few moments ago, and once he runs around her to cut her off she says, with a bit less aggressiveness, "Oh....so now you care...sorry about that. And it's not one. I have three back there currently. Only one is sick though. I promised them all food, and I would love help with finding what ails the one...he has trouble standing and a fever, as well as difficulty breathing at times along with all this, he has an odd tendancy to shed scales until he is bleeding...I have separated him from the other two to keep it from spreading, anything you know of? If not it's okay, I'll keep caring for him. That one has been with me for nearly four days now, while the others are new." She gives him a kinder look again and says, "Thank you...and please forgive me for yelling at you, I had thought you just used me to clear your lair..." Her stomach gave a protesting noise now, signifying that she had not been fed herself for quite some time now, but she merely looked at it nervously for a moment and pushed past Atteryv.

Atteryv would stand quite solidly as she went to push past him. "Go eat. You're no good to those in your care dead... And you'll need your strength for hunting." He thinks a moment on the symptoms she describes. "No, never had that happen. We can try something for fever and something else in case he's somehow gotten himself infested with worms, though. And.. If you're going to feed three, you probably want fast meat. Gators take a bit of finding, and they're heavy.. I know where there is a herd of deer, though, and I'll show you once you've put away a chunk of that gator yourself. Two or three should be easy hunting for a pair, as long as we're careful of the stag." Again nudging her towards the food, he looks around for the herbs he had mentioned, remembering his earlier attempts at planting the more useful ones near his lair. Both are in fair supply near the recently cleared pond, ironically.

Marhri still attempted to push past him as he spoke, determined to get food for the younger dragons, but her strength was much less than Atteryv, both due to her fatigue from not having eaten, and due to the fact he was physically stronger than her. "Worms...I don't know perhaps. I doubt that'd be why his scales are falling off though." She finally stops trying to push past Atteryv, having exhausted herself from several factors, one including the flight he suspected had exhausted her earlier. She shakily stood back up and clutched her stomach as pain shot through it, "Look what you did!-" She started before looking away regretfully, "...sorry, I guess I should eat...I haven't eaten myself for almost two days now...well aside from that bite I had earlier." She started dragging herself back over to the gator and said, "So...you will help me hunt after all this?"

Atteryv smiles lightly when she finally gives up, though he seems worried when she clutches her stomach. At her question, he nods slowly. "Yes. Everyone deserves a chance.. Especially those who have lost their parents or been turned out." He frowns slightly at the second condition, but goes on. "And you had every reason to assume the worst of me.. I'd already done it to you, and I am sorry for that. Being here has.. Toughened me, I suppose. Both physically and mentally... But you are just looking out for those who can't do it for themselves. That's enough in itself to make me want to help..." He returns to eat a bit more himself, raising an eyeridge. "What's more, you've starved yourself until you could bring back enough for them? That's.. Admirable."

Marhri looked up at him while she ate, gulping down the scrap of meat she'd torn off for herself before saying, "I...thought you'd say that was weak...most would see so if someone starves themselves. So I guess I did assume the worst of you...I'm sorry, you just seemed not to care about it." She smiled at his compliment and took another bite of the meat before saying, "Thank you...I'm glad that you think so. And this is pretty good meat. About the yelling..." She looked away, "I get aggerssive when I'm upset. I get aggressive easily...sorry. And I'm not sure if you'd say starve myself. I mean, it's not like I wouldn't have eaten the food if I could. I just am not used to hunting for more than myself, so, so far I haven't gotten enough for myself too, just means I'll have to try harder. And...thank you for the help, I could really use it."

Atteryv chuckles, waving away her thanks. "True, most would see it as weak... But I'm still rather young myself, and I won't tell you how often I used to wish for someone to help care for me..." He trails off sadly, recalling why he was alone. "Anyways, I'm over it now, mostly.. But glad to help care for those who don't have my strength." Thinking a few moments, he frowns lightly. "Where are their parents? Certainly they weren't exiled like I was... At least, not three of them." He waits for an answer now, tail whipping in agitation as he recalls his own parents and their rejection, stinging freshly even after so much time away from it.

Marhri laughed a bit and said, "Well if you needed it...I would take care of you, but...you are stronger and better at hunting than me, so I don't think you really would need my help. Still, I am sorry to hear that no one took care of you." She tore out a much larger piece of meat, feeling a bit more like eating was ok, and continued, "I am not sure one of the girls said they were lost, the other girl acted as if this was untrue when she said it, I think they might be sisters. The sick one has not said much, so I have no idea what happened to them. And I am glad to care for those who cannot care for themselves, like you said, everyone deserves a chance." She watches him and notices whatever he is speaking of seems to upset him before brushing her wing across his face and saying, "Atteryv....relax, please. That's all in the past, and you're a better person than I gave you credit for." Hoping that would comfort him, she started digging into the gator again.

Atteryv smiles and stretches his neck across the carcass to appreciatively nudge Marhri. "Thank you for trying to make me feel better.. But I'm over it, really. Just not comfortable around... You know, never mind." He waits for her to finish eating before nodding in a north-easterly direction. "The deer are that way.. Go for one and run with it, the stag is aggressive. If you can get in the air or a tree, all the better." The wind would conveniently shift and carry the animal's scent from far upwind of the pair, and Atteryv stands when he catches it. "Just so you know, because there won't be time to talk once we're close." With this, he sets out towards the herd of deer, expecting her to follow.

She followed him, taking into account the advice he was giving her. So we need to stay away from the Stag then..okay." Atteryv snorts and launches himself into the air after her, resolving to answer her once they had finished. "Ready, then." He nods to the herd of deer and swoops down on them, knocking the stag to the ground and pouncing a doe in the same moment. As always, he takes his own safety into consideration and launches into the air, straining under the weight of his kill but managing to make it to the front of his lair with it. Then he does something abnormal, going back to help Marhri, merely circling above her if she doesn't need it.
